New Legislation Introduced To Protect Right Whales
June 19, 2018
Update - 3/26/2019: The Scientific Assistance for Very Endangered North Atlantic Right Whales Act of 2019 or the 'SAVE Right Whales Act' (H.R. 1568) has been reintroduced in the 116th Congress. We have written a post about it that explains our endorsement along with some of our concerns about the legislation: SAVE Right Whales Act (H.R. 1568) Draws Praise, Along With Concerns.
Legislation that calls for the funding of research on projects and inventions designed to help protect North Atlantic right whales has been introduced in Congress. The fact that a few members of Congress have introduced this legislation is good news but we do need to give a word of caution. This legislation is only part of the solution and it currently has no chance of being signed into law. It can't pass the Senate or the House right now and would most likely not be signed into law even if it did pass both chambers. The absolute earliest it could be signed into law would be January 2021 and that's only if Democrats gained much more power in the next two elections. Again, we do approve of this legislation and we truly hate to be the bearers of bad news but we'd be remiss if we didn't talk about the very low chances of it passing in the near future. For now, the struggle goes on in other forms.
